Peace

Outside our guestroom window is a reminder. It has four sides which Alice painted to reflect our mutual ancestry: part Spanish (her), part Italian and Slovak (me) and American.

The Peace Pole Project was started in Japan by Masahisa Goi (1916 – 1980), who dedicated his life to spreading the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth”. Mr. Goi was greatly affected by the destruction caused by World War II and the atomic bombs which fell on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

For us, the pole is a reminder of what has been planted in us by our parents, from our spirituality as well as our combined learning and growing through the years.

There was once a queen who offered a prize to the artist who could paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The queen looked at all the pictures. After much deliberation, she was down to the last two. She had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for the peaceful mountains that towered around it. Fluffy white clouds floated overhead in a blue sky. Everyone who saw this picture remarked at the tranquility of the scenery. The second picture had beautifully drawn mountains, too. But these mountains were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell and lightning flashed. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not appear to be a peaceful place at all. But, when the queen looked closer, she saw that behind the waterfall was a tiny bush growing in the rock. Within the branches, a bird had built a nest. There in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest. The queen chose this picture as the perfect picture of peace. "Peace", she explained, "is not only in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. Peace is in the midst of things as they are, when there is calm in your heart."

Who or what do you allow to diminish or kidnap your peace? What if your peace was generated from within and not something that relied on outside experiences? Imagine how free you would feel about things that normally bother you! It IS possible to attain this peace- for you have it inside, just buried perhaps by too many years of disappointment and anger.

If you want that kind of freedom and deep peace, consider a conversation with me. Click here for more details:
